Sam Duckworth slashed his crusader cape in a final flourish as he said goodbye to his alta ego, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, but like the Phoenix rising from the ashes Sam now has a bright shiny new project called Recreations.

The musician will be bringing his new outfit to Swindon on Friday, May 13 at the Victoria, Victoria Road, Old Town from 8pm, when he will play some of the songs from the new album, Baby Boomers 2. The album is distinguished by his well known gentle acoustic guitar and tub-thumping groove, but it also has a new crisper electronica and feisty funk with a thread of political thrust, giving a nod to Sam's political activities.

Sam says he felt it was time for a change. He felt that at the age of 30 he was a little embarrassed about telling people he was named after a Batman headline in Retro Gamer magazine. So he named his new outfit after one of his favourite American TV sitcoms instead - Parks and Recreation.

"I always get tagged as being a political musician,'' he said. "But most of my songs are not political. It is just that a lot of the stuff I do outside music is political, so I wanted an album that was sort of both but didn't feel like doom and gloom.''

Sam's political rights ideals include being an avid supporter of Love Music Hate Racism and he is a Fairtrade supporter.

Along with his musical adventures, Sam featured in the TV soap Hollyoaks in 2008, as part of a gig staged in the village.

Four years ago the musician faced a real life changing moment. He was in Africa and contracted an infection caused by a parasitic worm, which left him in and out of hospital for a year with fears of Cancer constantly looming. Fortunately it was found in time and Sam pulled through the ordeal, but facing the thought that he might die obviously had a profound effect, and it shows in his music.

Sam said: "A lot of people don't feel they have any ownership over the future, but I believe if things need to be different they can be. It might take a radical change but that's the joy of being human. It's just a mindset shift.''

Sam is stopping off in Swindon as part of his tour with his new Xtra Mile label mate, Rob Lynch and Southampton based, Sean McGowan. Sam will be at the Victoria in Swindon from 8pm on May 13. Tickets are £8 from 01793 535713.
