STUDENTS studying Public Services at Swindon College were given a valuable insight into a potential career route last week when they had a visit from the Army.

Major Lucy Smith and Staff Sergeant Anthony Burrell, who are based at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, visited the college to talk to young people about life in the military.

They delivered an informative multimedia presentation to 25 Level 3 students, explaining the role of the Army in 2016 and outlining the vast range of career opportunities available.

Major Smith and Staff Sergeant Burrell are part of the Army Engagement Team, their role is to visit communities and educational establishments around the UK in an effort to widen the understanding of the Army’s function, how its men and women are trained and how they are adapting to the challenges of the modern environment.

The presentation was followed by a Q & A session, where the two experienced soldiers shared their own views on Army life.

College courses in Public Services are designed to inspire young people to explore potential careers in the uniformed services, whether that be the armed forces, the police, fire service, ambulance or even lesser-known organisations such as HM Customs or the UK Border Agency.

As well as information visits, the course includes fitness training and skill development in areas such as teamwork and leadership.

Jamie Rice, lecturer in Public Services at Swindon College, said: “The opportunity for students to hear first-hand what the Army has to offer is hugely beneficial.

‘’Many of our students have been inspired by presentations such as these, and have now gone on to have fulfilling and successful careers.”

One student who already has his heart set on a career in the Army is 17-year-old Keiron Giddings, he described the visit as very informative.

Keiron said: “It’s good to hear from people with real experience. I’ve recently applied for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and hope to be able to start training once I’ve finished college.”

“Everything I’ve learnt over the past few years on the Public Services course has only reinforced that this is what I want to do.

“It’s given me the knowledge and skills to set me on the right path to what I hope will be a longstanding career in the Army.”
