SWINDON’S Jazz Carlin admits she has concerns about the Zika virus but trusts Team GB to keep athletes safe at the Rio Olympics in August.

On Friday, 150 experts wrote an open letter to the World Health Organisation (WHO) calling for the Olympic Games to be postponed or moved due to the threat of the mosquito-borne disease – which is linked to birth defects.

However, the WHO have rejected the call stating that there is “no public justification for postponing or cancelling the Games” and that they will “continue to monitor the situation” and update advice given to athletes.

With Carlin having already secured her place in Great Britain’s swimming squad for Rio, which starts in less than 10 weeks, she says she is putting her trust in the team around her to ensure she is kept safe.

“Everyone involved in sport have been keeping up to date with the media and seeing what is going on,” Carlin told the Advertiser.

“I think we’re all human, we’re not all robots who just get on with it, and there are some things that would worry us but we have got to put the trust into Team GB and they are looking after us the best way possible.

“We have got to respect them and know they will be looking out for us and won’t be putting us into the position where things are dangerous.”

Meanwhile, Carlin will also have to deal with the stifling conditions with average temperatures of 22˚C and an average humidity of around 77 per cent.

As a result, ‘morning’ sessions will start at 1pm and evening sessions starting at 10pm local time. However, night owl Carlin believes that she will be fully prepared for whatever the conditions and knows that it will be the same for all athletes.

“The finals are starting at 10pm Rio time and that is just a bonus,” added Carlin.

“It is always going to be a different environment and a different atmosphere.

“I am more of a late night person than an early morning person and I think that can only help.

“We’ve trained all over the world and we are ready for it.

“If we go in there thinking we can handle anything that can be thrown at us then I think we are going to be in a great position.”
