BEFORE the ducks took to the water at the Westcott Recreation Ground this afternoon it was the dogs that were the stars of the show.

A new addition to the annual duck race event itinerary, the fun dog show – organised by Lucy Pet Carer doggy day care and kennels – saw dogs and their handlers compete across eight categories.

Lucy Candy, owner of Lucy Pet Carer, said: “We ran a dog agility course last year and that was really popular.

“When we were approached and asked to run a dog show as well we thought it was a great idea.

“We’ve got eight classes including most handsome, best rescue dog, best junior handler and the dog that is most like its owner.

“We perhaps could have done with a bit sunnier weather but the turnout has been good and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.”

There were prizes from first to fifth place in each class, with the winners receiving rosettes and a goody bag from Lucy Pet Carer with some useful pet info from co-sponsors, Purton Vets.

As well as being on hand to help with information, Purton Vets also had their own prize which was judged by Animal Behaviourist and Veterinary Nurse, Jocelyn Lander.

She said: “There were some fantastic dogs, mostly very well behaved.

“It’s hard to describe exactly what we’re looking for really, I suppose we want to see a good connection between the dog and the owner and to hear a little bit about the dog.

“But mostly it’s just a sense you get about a certain dog.”

The winner of the Purton Vets’ favourite class was silver Labrador Boston – the judges commented on his unusual colouring and great character.

Boston’s owner, Nathan Evans from Lyneham, said it was a surprise to come away with the win.

“We certainly weren’t expecting it, we mainly brought him along to get him used to socialising with other dogs.

“We heard about this dog show and thought it would be a good opportunity.

“It’s nice because it’s a relaxed environment, nothing too up tight – we’ve made a day of it and we’re having a great time.”
