TOWN and country folk have an opportunity to learn about how their daily pinta is produced when Lotmead Farm takes part in Open Farm Sunday this weekend.

The working dairy farm at Wanborough has been supplying milk for more than 65 years and is currently home to a herd of 300 cows and their calves.

Visitors can listen to informal talks about the cattle and milking, before taking a trailer ride around the fields.

Manager John Meaden said: “We’ll be opening for the season on June 5 and taking part in the national Open Farm Sunday to give the people of Swindon a behind-the-scenes look into growing fruit and dairy farming.

“As long as the days between now and then stay warm and sunny there will also be strawberries to pick too. However, there may be a limited supply so if you want to pick some fruit I’d recommend getting here early.”

A nature trail, a small animal enclosure and play areas will also help to keep youngster amused.

Open Farm Sunday is a national event aimed at encouraging people to learn about farming and how the countryside is managed.

Started in 2006, it is organised by farmers’ group Linking Environment And Farming and last year attracted a record 291, 000 visitors to 389 farms around the country.

Lotmead Farm’s gates will be open between 11am and 4pm.

Other farms in the area taking part this year include Snap Farm at Aldbourne, Gable End Farm, Grittenham, Bow-in-the Cloud vineyard at Noah’s Ark, Garsdon and Broadwell Manor Farm near Lechlade.

Future events planned at Lotmead include a Horses and Hawks weekend with Shire horses and birds of prey, duck herding and dog training displays and a strawberry drive with vintage cars.
