DALEKS, stormtroopers, and Transformers were among the many colourful characters invading Steam over the course of the weekend.

From across the galaxy, thousands of science-fiction fans of all ages turned out for Swindon Comic Con, the largest event of its type ever held in the town.

When the doors opened, people were already queuing around the building eager to meet like-minded enthusiasts, see memorabilia from their favourite films and meet famous faces from the television.

The size of the event meant it stretched across the entire museum, leading to Darth Vader, Batman and others wondering in amongst the historic steam trains.

“I’m having so much fun,” said Sarah Obson, 23, of Liden, who was dressed as a character from Star Wars.

“So many people are dressed up and just having a good time. It’s actually quite funny to see all these famous characters from films and TV just wandering around.”

There were a host of celebrities in attendance from former Bond Girls to Doctor Who stars.

And it was not just science-fiction celebrities in attendance with John Challis and Sue Holderness, better known as Boycie and Marlene from Only Fools and Horses, Eddie the Eagle and Mark Labbett and Shaun Wallace from The Chase also proving popular with visitors.

Alex Whitlock, of Old Town, came to Comic Con with his two young sons.

He said: “They are both having a great time seeing everyone dressed up. I’m not a major fan but some of the costumes are great.

“It’s really good for Swindon to be able to host something this big.”

The event has been over a year in the making and local shop owner Luke Skywalker, who put everything together, said it was good to see everyone having fun.

He said: “It is great to see so many people enjoying themselves. It’s been hard work to put everything together but to see so many people turn up is good.”

Luke and the other organisers have not ruled out holding a second event but are waiting for the dust to settle on this weekend’s event before making any decisions.
