THE streets of Eastcott were filled with cheers on Sunday as the circus came to town.

Now in its fourth year, the annual summer event took place and had a special theme to mark the 175th anniversary of Swindon.

So after researching the history of the area, the Eastcott community organisation, which puts on the event, decided to put on some old-fashioned entertainment.

“With it being the 175th anniversary this year we wanted to do something special so we looked back at what the area was like,” said Caroline Davies-Khan, chairman of the group.

“It turns out circuses used to regularly come to Eastcott during the Victorian era so we thought it would be amazing if we had a circus themed day, which is what we’ve gone for.

“We started at midday when anyone who wanted could come along, bring some food to and have something to eat with everyone.

“After that, we had an aerial show, a circus skills workshop and a Punch and Judy Show as well as crafts.”

Dozens of families came along to enjoy the event, which took place outside the Savernake Street Social Hall, which was made even more special by the glorious weather.

Caroline said: “It’s great to see everyone having fun and coming out to enjoy their community. But it’s also a good chance for people to meet their neighbours.

“We put on events regularly as it is a great way of bringing everyone together.

“We also do what we can to keep them all free for people so I thank all the other organisations which support us.”

Caroline and her team are not finished with marking this important year in Swindon’s history and are keen to do more to find out about Eastcott, and especially the community centre.

“When we looked back we found out was a British Restaurant at one point,” said Caroline.

“So we are keen to find out more and speak with people who might have memories or knowledge of the area.”

A coffee event is being held on July 22 at 2pm and anyone who may know about the centre, or want to learn more, is invited.
