A DRIVER had a lucky escape this morning when their car hit a low wall and ended up in the driveway of a house.

Witnesses said the car was coming along Queen's Road in Royal Wootton Bassett at speed when it failed to stop at a T-junction.

It narrowly missed a passing car as it careered straight across Longleaze, taking out a garden wall and missing the front room of a house by inches.

It is not known why the driver didn't brake at the junction, although it has been suggested that inappropriate footwear may have been to blame.

Violet Slough, 84, lives in the house that was narrowly missed by the runaway car.

She said: "I was in the other room and I heard this almighty bang - I thought it sounded like a thunderstorm was on the way.

"A short while later I heard a knock at the door and came out to find a car half way up the drive.

"I'm not sure what caused it to crash but it's very lucky that nobody was hurt either walking along the pavement or driving along the road the other way."

Residents commented on the excess speed that drivers use when going along Longleaze, with cars racing from one end to the other as they cut through to avoid traffic.

Indeed recently, a car travelling at speed misjudged the corner on the opposite side of the street to the scene of this morning's accident.

It took out a wall which has only just been replaced - on that occasion, the occupants of the vehicle made off.

An off-duty police officer was first on the scene of this morning's incident, he was able to verify that nobody was hurt - the driver's air bag had done its job and gone off in the Peugeot.

A breath-test, carried out as part of the newly-launched summer drink-drive campaign, showed the driver had not been drinking.
