POLICE have taped off a flat in Gorse Hill after a woman has been seriously injured and is in a 'critical condition'.

The front door of the property in Cricklade Road, next to Little Panda Chinese takeaway, has been smashed down and officers have been there since the early hours of this morning.

The woman, 25, has been taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with a serious head injury after reportedly falling down the stairs.

Police were called at 2.45am and are not treating the incident as suspicious. However, an officer remains outside the address this afternoon.

A spokesman said: “Wiltshire Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the serious injury of a 25-year-old woman from Swindon.

"She is currently at Bristol’s Southmead Hospital with head injuries.

“We are early in the investigation but at this stage we do not believe it to be a suspicious incident."

A spokesman from South Western Ambulance Service added: "The ambulance service was called to a residential address at 2.30am to reports of a female who had fallen down the stairs and had a head injury.

"A paramedic in a car and an ambulance attended the scene as well as the critical care team from the Wiltshire air ambulance in a car.

"The patient was taken to Southmead Hospital in a critical condition."
