THE Old Town Festival will continue today with some rousing classical music, a historical wander around the town and some swinging jazz numbers.

A number of organ recitals with piano interludes will be played at Christ Church this afternoon between 1pm and 2pm. Director of music at Christ Church Tim Eyles and Trinity College of Music piano student Nicoleta Ivascu will be taking to the keys to perform pieces from Mozart, Bach, Moszkowski and Lefebure-Wely.

Former director of music at St Mark’s Church Richard Sutcliffe will also be performing a piece by Walton during the recitals. Doors open from noon for refreshments ahead of the performances, with tickets costing £5 available in advance from Rays Ice Cream on Devizes Road or on the door.

Later on there will be a guided walk taking in ten bridges to Old Town. The 3.6 mile walk forms part of the Swindon 175 celebrations and will offer great views of the countryside to the south and west of Old Town. The walk will explore the old railway line south of Old Town, the developments at East and Middle Wichel and the new section of the Wilts and Berks Canal.

Those wishing to take part should meet at the bus stop on Newport Street outside the Co-op for 6pm to catch the 6.09pm bus to East Wichel. Those wishing to make their own way there should meet at 6.20pm at the Bayberry pub in East Wichel. The walk costs £3.50 for adults while children go free.

The day’s events will be rounded off with a free musical performance at Baker Street on Wood Street from 8pm. Welsh jazz swingers the Erica Lyons Quartet, featuring former trumpeter of Keith Tippett’s Big Band Gethin Liddington, will entertain jazz lovers with an exciting line-up.

On Wednesday the June Lethbridge 10k will start from the Croft Sports Centre at 7.30pm, but for those feeling a little less energetic there will be a pub quiz will be held at the Clifton pub on Clifton Street from 9pm. Entry is £1 per person.

The events come ahead of the popular Bowl Pop and Rock concert that will be staged in the Town Gardens on Saturday from noon until 10.30pm.
