IT was lights, camera - action as talented Swindon College students dazzled at their end of year media make-up and fashion show.

Friends, family and colleagues gathered at STEAM on Thursday to see the impressive hair, makeup and outfits the teenagers had created inspired by different themes, including out of this world and Roald Dahl.

The catwalk came alive as the models strutted their stuff to the upbeat music wearing bold makeup, big hair and eye-catching frocks. Pearls, glitter, multi-coloured wigs and quirky prosthetics were among the accessories.

Media makeup diploma student Emma Browne, 16, who lives in Ferndale, had to create a look inspired by the theme of under the sea. She went for a coral creation on her friend and model Llama Zakhour.

This involved covering Llama’s white netted skirt with shells. She then added accessories to the rest of the black and red dress she created and contoured Llama's face to make it look hollow with purple and blue tones, as well as a splash of glitter to add a 3D effect. For the hair she back-combed it and created a bold quiff.

“It took about two or three weeks just to develop the design,” said Emma. “I used deep tones to keep the theme of coral and the seabed.”

The students got to STEAM at 10am to begin working on their models. Emma, an aspiring makeup artist, said: “I started off doing the hair because I knew it would take a long time and it took two hours. It then took two hours to do the makeup ready for the rehearsal.

“We were so excited but I was a little bit nervous. We had such an adrenaline rush and it was buzzing backstage.

“My family were out there watching and they were really impressed. A lot of people think the first year students may not be as good but everyone’s designs were so different, big and bold and really original.

“There was definitely rivalry but it was good rivalry and healthy competition and we were all egging each other on.

“Afterwards I felt relieved because it went so well and everyone was so excited and the energy was amazing.

“Well done to the students and I want to thank the lecturers for helping us put this on.”

Media makeup lecturer Ellie Baskerville said she was amazed by the efforts the students put into their work.

She said: “The show was incredible. It’s a great opportunity for students to showcase their work after months of preparation. I’m incredibly proud of each and every one of them.’’
