IT all started so well but by the 90th minute it was the same familiar story for fans packed into The Swiss Chalet in Swindon as once again England faltered in a major tournament.

Wayne Rooney scored an early penalty for England after a foul on Raheem Sterling and England fans were dreaming of a meeting with France in the quarter-finals.

But that euphoria lasted just 90 seconds as first the minnows of Iceland pegged them back and then took the lead thanks to a Joe Hart howler.

The mood in the pub became increasingly fractious when fans got angrier and angrier as the second half went on. Frustrated calls for Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford were ringing about the Gorse Hill pub in the opening minutes of the second half.

But as England huffed and puffed, heads were held in hands and glasses banged on tables in frustration.

As the final whistle blew and boos rang around the bar James Massam, 33, said: “England have lived up to my expectation so far. We really have not been impressive.”

Tim Stevens, leader of local band Shepherd’s Pie, added bitterly: “Over-paid under achievers, once again - 30 years ago a defeat to Iceland would have been the unthinkable.

"It just shows how far behind we have fallen from the world, we are no longer a big football nation.”

The fans weren't the only ones complaining about England's worst humiliation since they were knocked out of the 1950 World Cup by the USA.

Swiss Chalet landlady Tina Fordham said that it will now affect trade as there will be no more really busy match nights.

“It is the same old England, we left Europe last week and have now crashed out of the Euros, " she said.

"For a Monday the pub was full and it was a great atmosphere and now it is over. A lot of disappointment is around the pub now instead of happy fans."

Not even manager Roy Hodgson's resignation could appease Simon Collett, of Gorse Hill.

“It was a disappointing display," he said. "I thought we would win. I think we could have given France a game as well until I saw this performance tonight."
