THE memory of an 11-year-old boy who died in a road accident will live on through a charity launched in his name.

Daniel Climance died in June last year when he collided with a road-sweeper while cycling with his father and older brother in Purton.

Inspired by the Bridlewood Primary pupil’s love of sport the Doing It For Dan charity will be launched this week to give children and young people opportunities to follow their dreams through sport.

With everything in place the good cause plans to have charitable status confirmed in a matter of weeks.

This follows on from the Doing It For Dan virtual race which proved so successful that throughout 2015, 1,000 people raised over £20,000 for road safety charity Brake.

Daniel’s parents Helen Lucas and Stuart Climance were driven to create the charity after being ‘overwhelmed’ by the success of the virtual run.

Helen, a solicitor from Taw Hill, said the charity ensured more children could get involved in sports as Daniel had.

“It was overwhelming how much support we got for Doing it For Dan, we were really taken aback by how much support was given to us by the community in Swindon and worldwide,” she said.

“After the success of the virtual run where so much money was raised we started to think we wanted to help other children and young people in the community achieve their dreams.

“We wanted to do something a bit more personal in Dan’s memory because he was really sporty.

“He played football for his local team, he did Taekwondo, it was something he had a real passion for.”

Doing It For Dan will raise money to help children and young adults realise their sporting dreams. It aims to help with grants to individuals and organisations.

The website will see its official launch this Friday (JULY 1) with people in the town encouraged to hold their own fundraising events to benefit sporty youngsters.

“Whether it’s sponsoring someone to go to the Olympics or paying for new football kits we hope that the charity will take off,” said Helen.

“I think Dan would have been really proud. It’s something that Daniel would have approved of, he was such a lovely and caring boy and he would do anything to help out others."
