KINGSHILL Road has been closed to drivers after subsidence was found on a section of the road.

The problem was discovered in the middle of the A4289 between Clifton Street and Bowood Road.

Swindon Borough Council’s highways team is working with Thames Water to investigate the cause so the road can be repaired.

"The size and location of the subsidence means that it isn’t safe to keep the road open to through traffic," said a spokesman for the council.

"In order to carry out this urgent work Kingshill was closed after today's peak morning period and drivers are being advised to find an alternative route. Access will be maintained for residents and pedestrians."

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: “We inspected our sewer under Kingshill Road last week and found no problems with it, but have offered to support the council with their investigations by checking the pipes again.”

A diversion route is in place which will take motorists via Wichelstowe from Bath Road on to Devizes Road, Croft Road, Black Horse Way, Foxham Way, Peglars Way, Redpost Drive and Wootton Bassett Road.

It is anticipated that Kingshill Road will be closed for the next few days and the council will update motorists when it is to be reopened.
