A SEA of poppies flooded the Commonweal School today as students commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Students created poppy tributes in their history lessons to reflect on sacrifices made by soldiers during the Battle.

They then wrote poignant messages on the poppies which are on display in the school’s main reception area.

This display will remain up for 141 days, the total length of the battle.

The public are invited to visit the school and write their own message of remembrance on a poppy.

Head of history, Esme Balance said:

“We think it is important for students to remember all those who have lost their lives in the First World War. The Somme in 1916 is a particularly poignant battle that truly shows the sacrifice made by so many.

“It is often difficult today to explain and give students an understanding of the experience of these men, sometimes not much older than the students we teach. It is often best said by the men who were there themselves.”

Year 10 students have also visited the Somme Battlefields in Thiepval, France to honour the fallen soldiers.

Student Aayushi said: “The Battlefields trip was a great experience to commemorate the fallen soldiers who helped shape our future today”

Sumayyah added: “When on the Somme trip, we were able to share an amazing experience and learn the importance of remembrance and sacrifice.”
