FIREFIGHTERS are on the scene of a fire at a plastics factory in Chippenham.

Crews were called to Wavin Plastics in Parsonage Way – opposite the main factory - at 2.34pm and found around 10 tonnes of packaged and palleted PVC product well alight in the open.

The fire has also affected live power cables over the site, which has made the firefighting operation more complex.

Five fire engines – from Chippenham, Corsham, Calne, Melksham and Trowbridge – supported by the heavy rescue unit from Trowbridge and a water carrier from Royal Wootton Bassett were mobilised to the scene.

As at 4.30pm, the fire had been contained and the attendance was being reduced to two fire crews.

Efforts are still underway by engineers to isolate the electricity supply and make the fallen cables safe.

The service is working with colleagues from Wiltshire Police, Wiltshire Council, South Western Ambulance Service, Public Health England and the Environment Agency to ensure that there is no risk to the public.

The initial thick smoke plume from the fire dissipated quickly, but anyone concerned that they may have been affected by it, particularly if they have a pre-existing respiratory condition, should call NHS 111 or seek other medical advice.

The cause of fire is now under investigation.
