THE MECA will be transformed on Saturday night as it hosts the stars of one of the South West’s biggest wrestling leagues.

The 4FW Ultimate Supremacy showcase will feature some of the biggest local names as well as guest stars from the hit American brands, WWE and TNA.

4FW stands for Four Front Wrestling, a wrestling league based in Swindon that now runs about 60 events each year.

David Sharp, 34, of West Swindon, is the founder and director of 4FW.

He said: “Wrestling is getting really big in this country, we recently put on a show with Rey Mysterio who is a global name and had people coming from all over the UK to see him – there were 1,500 people in the MECA.

“It’s just not the shows, we also do an on-demand video service for the fans who can’t make the shows which is becoming really popular too.”

4FW has not always filled arenas and attracted the biggest names in the business, their origins are far more humble than that.

“We’ve been going for 12 years,” explained David.

“We started at Pinehurst People’s Centre with just 120 people and now we’re in the thousand plus MECA.

“I started a training school at Cheney Manor and some of the trainees that came up with us have managed to travel all round the world through wrestling.”

The large scale American wrestling productions are known for the characters and storylines as much as the in-ring action and 4FW has tried to replicate that same sense of drama and plotlines with their own stars.

By bringing in the bigger names as guest wrestlers they can attract the crowds who then hopefully leave having discovered new names from much closer to home.

Saturday’s event, 4FW’s Ultimate Supremacy, will see six matches contested with two championships up for grabs.

Reigning heavyweight champion Saime Sahin, a giant of a man who trained right here in Swindon, will be defending his belt in front of his fans.

Former WWE tag team champion Evan Bourne will also be featured on the card along with a fellow WWE champion Justin Gabriel and TNA star Mark Andrews.

The doors will open on Saturday at 6pm with the event getting underway an hour later.

Tickets are available either through the MECA or on the 4FW website.

Two children up to the age of 14 can get in free with each paying adult, organisers say they pitch the events as suitable for all the family but not so simplistic as to be insulting to adult fans.

General seating is £15 and general standing tickets are £10.

A range of VIP packages are also available costing either £30 or £20 – VIP tickets will get you in to meet the wrestlers before the show.
