WANBOROUGH Primary School has been recognised for supporting Young Carers.

The school has been presented with the Young Carer Award from Swindon Carers Centre during a special celebration assembly held at the school earlier this month.

The prestigious award was created by Kemble artist, Jo Moreman and presented to the school's Young Carer Lead, Rachel Hingley and young carers.

Fiona Prinzi, Swindon Carers Centre development and communications director said: "It has been a pleasure to work with Rachel and the school over the last year and see the Young Carer Award in action. It is vitally important schools and academies understand the needs of young carers and Swindon Carers Centre is here to recognise the wonderful work our Swindon schools do via the Young Carer Award".

Swindon Carers Centre is working with 49 schools and Wanborough Primary School is the 31st school to receive the full award. Their dedicated Schools Development Officer, Ann Giles works in partnership with schools at no cost, as this work is fully funded by the Big Lottery Fund.

Swindon Carers Centre developed the Young Carer Award for Schools because young carers nationally were saying they were not always getting the support they needed from their school or college. Local statistics suggested young carers were not all achieving their academic potential. The aim of the award is to ensure a range of support is available and accessible to all young carers in order they have the opportunities they need to achieve their full potential.
