A MAN has appeared at Swindon Magistrates' Court charged with two counts of assault after hitting his partner over the head with his jacket and being aggressive towards the police officer who tried to arrest him.

Grant Gleed, 24, of Queen’s Road, pleaded guilty to both charges and said he was “very sorry” and admitted he had been “stupid”.

On July 2, Glee assaulted his partner by striking her with his jacket after the two got involved in an altercation.

An off-duty police officer witnessed the incident and called 999 because the woman appeared to be in some distress.

A policewoman arrived and tried to calm Gleed, who, the court heard, smelled heavily of intoxicants.

As the officer tried to restrain him he told her he was bigger and stronger than her and she should back off.

After a short chase, which involved Gleed giving up when he could no longer run any further, he was handcuffed and taken to the police station.

Gleed and his partner had been in a relationship for 10 months and are still together.

Gleed, who has a previous conviction for violent offences, estimated he had drunk between 10 and 15 bottles of alcohol immediately before the incident took place.

For assaulting the police officer he was fined £200 and told to pay a victim surcharge of £30. For the other assault he was order to pay £100 and an £85 contribution towards the costs of the prosecution.
