CLASSIC cars and vintage vans roared their way into Lydiard Park this weekend for the annual Auto and Retro festival.

Crowds of car enthusiasts stepped back in motoring history to peruse a selection of stunning classic cars from across the globe.

The day also boasted ukulele music, dance lessons, vintage tea room, champagne bar and a host of retro stalls

Event co-ordinator Kat Dixon said she was delighted with the turn-out for the event.

“I feel very proud when I’m looking around. We have over 200 cars this year, from Aston Martins to BMWs to Cobras to a Chevrolet Stingray. There’s something for everyone here and it’s brilliant to see so many people enjoying themselves.

“What most people don’t know is that most of these cars come from Swindon based owners and it’s amazing to think that all these amazing cars have been sitting in garages, unknown to anyone.

“My favourite car this year would have to be the AC Cobra, I’ve always wanted one of them.”

Dr Peter Swinyard, from St Andrew’s Ridge was one of the proud classic car owners exhibiting on the day. His British classic, a 1966 silver Daimler 2.5l V8 has real Italian leather seats and a wood veneer dashboard.

“This car is perfect, I just love this car,” he said.

“It drives like a dream and it’s the perfect vehicle to take on holiday or out for a summer drive. It always attracts a lot of attention when I’m out and about and it certainly makes people smile.

“I love seeing the collections of cars here today, it feels like you’ve stepped back in time.”

Tim and Helen Willstead, from Ogbourne St Andrew, brought their 1972 red Triumph Spitfire along on the day.

The couple said they were thrilled to be in the company of hundreds of their fellow classic car fans.

“It’s great to see so many people, young and old, exploring all the different vehicles and learning more about these classic cars,” said Tim.

“I always wanted a Triumph, it’s such an iconic car and absolutely beautiful to drive.”

“We’ve taken it to various events and we always get such a positive response, it makes people smile,” added Helen.

Rav Hansra, from Wichelstowe, attended with his children Milli, four and Bailey, 15.

“I love cars, I think my favourite car would be the Porsche GT,” the 35-year-old said.

“I’ve had a good look around and my favourite car would have to be the Dodge Viper, it just looks awesome. The kids are enjoying it because there’s so much to do here.”
