Market manager Kardien Gerbrands talks about Swindon’s farmers’ markets

HOPE you’re all feeling the benefits of the fabulous fruit selection at the market?

With the extreme heat we are having at the moment (and the copious sweating that goes along with it!) there is nothing healthier than keeping topped up with soft fruits (full of water, energy and vitamins) throughout the day.

I can say from personal experience that the combination of the detoxifying effects of the perspiration and the boost from the fruit has left me feeling healthier than ever!

Sadly it has been another poor year for honey with the climate playing havoc with the bees.

Thankfully Seven Bridges Honey is back at the market currently with their spring honey but apparently yields are low.

The current weather is much better, of course, so if it continues the autumn harvest should be better.

This week’s Manager’s Choice is the range of crab meat fish cakes lovingly prepared by Paul.

The cakes are made from fresh Bridlington crabs. They are boiled and then the meat is picked out, mixed with mashed potato, a pinch of salt and pepper and some fresh chilli, ginger and coriander — absolutely delicious.

The cakes can be squashed and fried or warmed through in the oven for 20 minutes. This Sunday Paul will have the crab cakes (plus his whole range of fish cakes) on offer at £1 each. Join us from 10am to 4pm at the Designer Outlet.
