AN 'emotional' 21-year-old who got drunk after being evicted from a hostel because his cooking set off a fire alarm was later arrested when he became aggressive in the town centre.

Michael Sheehan came before magistrates in Swindon where he pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in Bridge Street after officers found him crying outside Wilko.

Police were called to the bus station just after 8pm on Sunday were they found Sheehan slurring his words.

Keith Ballinger, prosecuting, told the court that officers described Sheehan, who gave his address as Raleigh Avenue, Walcot, as being intoxicated and emotional. He was being consoled by a friend and there were open cans of beer beside them.

The court also heard how Sheehan started shouting and swearing when people walked past and was also abusive to a female PCSO.

Emma Thacker, defending, said her client is receiving alcohol treatment and the loss of his accommodation proved extremely distressing.

She added that he accepted his language towards the PCSO was “somewhat colourful”.

She told the magistrates: “When police attended he was upset, he was crying in the doorstep of a shop. He accepts his language was somewhat colourful towards the PCSO.”

“He is also 21-years-old and he finds it very upsetting and stressful losing his accommodation.”

The court heard Sheehan was asked to leave Liddington House Hostel because he set off the fire alarm while cooking, which Miss Thacker described as being a “petty issue.”

Bench chairman Mary Holland said they would be fining him £100 but as he had been in custody they would take the costs in lieu, as well as writing off the victim surcharge of £100.

Sheehan is also due to face trial on October 5 at North West Wiltshire Magistrates' Court in Chippenham for an offence of criminal damage to a £2,500 mannequin in Topshop.

He pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to the incident on July 4 and was released on bail with the condition to not enter the clothing store in The Parade.
