A GROUP of charitable teenagers ended an epic week of fundraising on Thursday with a sponsored head shave.

The troupe, which consists of 12 teens aged between 15 and 17, crammed into Toni & Guy in the town centre and watched as three of their number braved the shave for charity.

Conlan Broderick, 15, Liv Francis, 16, and Harry Thorn, 16, all said goodbye to their locks as Daryl Greenaway’s clipper left them with bald bonces.

As part of the National Citizen Service programme, the teenagers, all from Swindon, have dedicated a week to raising funds for the children’s ward at the Great Western Hospital and the Brighter Futures Radiotherapy Appeal.

The NCS programme, which encourages young people to come together to develop life skills, lasts for four weeks and the team have just completed their third week, in which they had to undertake various kinds of social action.

Bailey Fisher, 16, from Moredon, said: “Part of the NCS programme involves trying to raise money for a charity and we chose to support Brighter Futures and the children’s ward at the GWH because they’re both really great causes.

“Some people in our group have had experience of children’s wards in the past so we thought we would do something to support it.”

The group undertook a sponsored walk around the town on July 27 and held a cake sale earlier in the week.

Group leader Alisha Bains, 22, said: “It’s brilliant that they’ve chosen to raise money for the hospital.

“When they first came together they were very shy and on edge but it didn’t take long for them to bond.

“They know they’re all in the same boat and going through the same things in life and it’s great that they have overcome so many challenges by working together.”

After the shave, Harry said: “It feels a bit weird but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. I’m sure I’ll get used to it – hopefully it won’t take long to grow back.

Liv, whose had sacrificed her long green hair, said: “It actually feels really nice. I’m glad I did it for a good cause.”

Amelia Gates, 19, one of the other team leaders, said: “It’s amazing to see people their age doing so well and caring about others and wanting to put a smile on people’s faces.

“They have all done themselves proud. Their confidence has grown enormously and it’s amazing to see how far they have come.”

The group is hoping to reach the £500 mark for the GWH and is confident that this last fundraising push will see them hit their target.

A representative from Brighter Futures wished to thank the group for all their fundraising efforts and the team at Toni & Guy for hosting the head shave.
