Joe Theobald, aka DJ Captain Wormhole, Looks at all things vinyl

THIS week I’ve been listening to music from Colombia.

Netflix has a new series of Narcos starting in September and I enjoyed the first series immensely... I would have called it Escobar’s Escapades though. Despite missing the golden title opportunity I do want to convey my respect for the creators, not least for exposing the quality of Columbian Salsa and Cumbia.

Regular readers will know that I’m quite partial to a Latin groove and the Colombians are super good at blowing trombones and banging cow bells.

If you want to check out what I’m so enthused about give Fruko Y Sus Tesos’ 1975 EL Grande LP a listen (you’ll find it on YouTube). It’s a good starting point with Salsa staples such as El Preso and funk laden Boogaloo infused quality cuts; pair this record with a cool daiquiri and a healthy dose of natural light.

If Latin swing ain’t your thing then this subject does also bring to mind the second studio album by Fun Lovin Criminals, 1998’s 100% Colombian.

Despite the title (which I think might have other connotations) there is little in the way of Colombian musical influence on this disc but it’s undoubtedly another super dope soundtrack to the summer.

If you actually ever go to Colombia (perhaps you might find work as a drugs mule) then do me a favour and visit Discolombia. It’s the last remaining outlet in what was once a 13-strong chain of record stores and the place sounds like a veritable El Dorado of Latin heat. The combined stock from all the old stores plus an adjoining label called Felito and regular additions quantify to in excess of 50,000 records.

Next week: Road beats.
