A CYCLE ride in memory of Michael Doyle, who died in Bulgaria, will kick-start a wave of fundraising in aid of his grieving family.

Family friend David Wright will get back in the saddle tomorrow for the 100 mile Cycle For Michael event from his Blunsdon home to Pandy, South Wales.

All proceeds will go towards the cost of Michael’s treatment and repatriation.

David said he was determined to help the family in any way he could.

“I am doing it in Michael’s memory to help raise funds for his family. You don’t expect to lose a son at that age and I think it’s terrible that something like this could happen in this day and age,” he said.

“I have known him and his dad for quite a number of years. I worked in a scrap metal yard and they used to come in. He was a lovely guy, really genuine.

“If I can raise £200 then that’s great, every little helps. But I would like to aim for more than that.

“I have only been cycling for about a year and I have never done more than 60 miles, but I feel really good about it – I’m confident.

“It will be such an achievement, not just for me, but for Michael and his memory.

“I don’t have millions of pounds, every little bit will help.”

Michael, 29, from Penhill died on August 15 from suspected blood poisoning and kidney failure after falling ill in Bulgaria.

Since his death, the community has rallied behind his family with a two day fundraising event due be held in Michael’s honour this weekend.

John Honeyman who runs the Swiss Chalet in Chapel Street is calling all sponsors, musicians and businesses to help with funds, raffle prizes and anything else in support of the Doyle family.

He said: This isn't my gig, it is the whole of Swindon’s gig. Let's go help this family, they need our help and it's needed now, get your heads down guys, get thinking and organising with me please.”

Rob Rogers, director of Gorse Hill Motor Company has donated a 2001 Nissan Almera towards the charity auction.

“I knew Michael very well, he was a nice person with a big character, I just want to help his parents as much as possible,” said Rob.

“It was such a shock to hear he had passed on.

“I hope it will raise £1,000, I’d be delighted with that, anything to help the family with bills or anything else they need.”
