Joe Theobald, aka DJ Captain Wormhole, Looks at all things vinyl

SOMETIMES things don’t always come together like you wanted. Like this week’s edition of Wormhole’s World, which was supposed to be another exciting interview.

Maybe I should have been a bit more organised. Maybe I could have tried a little harder. Ah well, here’s something else.

As you’ll know, the internet is prone to sensationalism. Whether it be a sports pundit’s outfit or a cat looking at cloud, the internet will almost certainly blow anything out of all proportion. It will do it with comments and memes and lists and petitions.

When I’m confronted with the digital clamour and the internet is saying to me that something is good, my natural disposition is to assume that the good thing is actually not good. I’m not talking about videos of ducks chasing dogs around rocks, I mean things like Breaking Bad.

You resist for many years because you know for a fact that it won’t hold a candle to The Sopranos or The Wire but when all that hype dies down and you’re hungover in bed on a Sunday and you’ve already watched all the Gavin & Staceys seven times over, you finally capitulate. And you were right. And that’s 60 hours I’ll never get back and Cransten will always be Hal to me, thanks very much.

Well, fool me once, shame on you, but fool me twice...

All I keep seeing on Facebook is that Stranger Things is epic. Watch Stranger Things! The Stranger Things soundtrack is really good! They’re releasing the incredible Stranger Things soundtrack on vinyl! Great. But I’m actually going to give this one a whirl, and in the spirit of journalistic enterprise I shall cast aside my cynicism and embrace the Zeitgeist.

***Breaks to watch some Stranger Things*** Well then. It’s pretty good. Since this is a ‘music column’ I’ll not go into the plot too much, but it’s basically a Stephen King-inspired ode to Spielberg with all the boys on BMXs and nefarious federal types you’ve come to know and love.

The soundtrack is an eerie Moroder-esque synth piece with tense jagged keys that build suspense in all the right ways. There’s also a cool scene with Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit.

I’ve only watched the first two episodes but so far I’d give it 7 and a half thumbs up.
