STUNNING images of the rolling Wiltshire countryside are not only lighting up Wroughton Library at the moment, but they are also catching the eyes of the judges of VisitWiltshire’s photographic competition.

Village photographer Chris Moody is the latest entrant of the tourism service’s annual competition, submitting striking images of the nearby countryside during “the golden hour”.

Originally from Bristol, Chris has settled in Wroughton and works for an international software technology company in Swindon, as well as devoting some of his time as a volunteer first aider with St John Ambulance. But he still finds time to get out and about with his camera – and has even been encouraging others to put their photographic skills to use.

“I have been a keen amateur photographer for many years, learning all I could from experimenting with film but now digital photography has opened up a whole new world of possibilities,” he said. “Whilst my main subjects are dogs, landscapes make a welcome change and interesting challenge.

“A year or so ago I setup a Facebook page for photographers in Wroughton. This has been a great success, bringing all kinds of talent together and we are currently exhibiting some of our work in the Wroughton Library.

“Living in Wroughton I find I am so close to some stunning country side and decided I would like to showcase some sun set pictures, so I thought of three locations that I really like. Hackpen Hill offers an amazing landscape view, made so much better in the hour before sunset - the golden hour. Long Barrow, well where else locally do we have architecture that is 5,500 years old? Such am amazing place.

“Just across the road we have Silbury Hill, without doubt the biggest challenge. No sooner was I setup to take the picture the sun would disappear behind the hill, so I had to run along the footpath to nail the shot, great fun none the less.”

Each of the three striking images have been submitted to the judges of VisitWiltshire’s photograph competition in the hope of being named this year’s winner.

The competition is still very much open for entries, with photographers able to submit up to five photographs each month until the deadline at the end of September – meaning there are now just ten chances for photographers to wow the judges.

To be in with a chance of winning, the photos should capture the essence of life in Wiltshire, its people and landscape, and tie in with any of VisitWiltshire's four ‘Timeless’ themes. These are:

• Timeless Wonders: including Stonehenge, Avebury, Salisbury Cathedral, the Kennet & Avon Canal and Wiltshire’s White Horses

• Timeless Places: including market towns, villages and other attractions

• Timeless Pleasures: including shopping, food and drink, festivals & events, arts & entertainment

• Timeless Nature: including big skies, rolling hills, flora and fauna

There will be one first prize of a £300 voucher for the best photograph overall, plus two runners up prizes of a £50 voucher each.
