SWINDON Supermarine's unbeaten start to the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West season ended this afternoon with a 2-1 defeat at North Leigh.

Dave Webb’s side travelled on the back of a promising start to the campaign and looking to maintain momentum after Saturday’s home game against Shortwood United was postponed by a waterlogged pitch.

But they got off to a poor start as they fell 1-0 behind in the first five minutes to Jamie Cook's strike.

Things went from bad to worse as the hosts doubled their advantage with four minutes of the first half to play, George Seacole on target.

The second half was a more even affair, Marine pulled a goal back when Brad Hooper scored from the spot, an incident that saw Leigh's Stuart Hole sent off, but they were unable to get back on terms despite Hooper hitting the post late on.

“We had a long journey because of an accident so didn’t get to the game until half past two which wasn’t ideal and we started in the same way really,” said Supermarine boss Webb.

“We conceded a goal in the first three minutes and then again just before half time, we didn’t get anywhere near the levels I’m used to seeing from us.

“Credit to the lads, we were better in the second half. They (North Leigh) were much better in the first half and we were much better in the second.”

He added: “Good sides don’t throw away 2-0 leads so it was always going to be tough - I think we hit the post twice.

“I’ve told the players they need to have a think about why they weren’t at the races for the first 45 minutes.

“It’s not been the Bank Holiday I was expecting, a postponement and a defeat, but a defeat might be the shock some of the players need.”

Supermarine face Portishead Town in the FA Cup on Saturday.
