A BRASS band is offering a melodious opportunity to aspiring musicians this autumn.

Swindon Pegasus School of Brass is hoping to recruit as many budding musicians as possible to kick start a brass music revolution in the town.

In a bid to open up the band to all they will be offering a free taster session each Saturday morning for the next six weeks.

People of any age are welcome to join the group every Saturday for an hour from 9.30am in the band hall opposite the Crown Inn in Stratton St Margaret.

Mark Blackwell, conductor of the band, said: “We are looking for new players to come along and join us. We will be starting off with introductory sessions and learning basic rhythms, and hopefully by the end we will be able to put on a small concert for family and friends.

“Brass playing is very good for young people as it develops confidence and team building skills. I have been involved with this sort of thing for more than 30 years now and I have made some really good friends.”

During the six weeks, people can expect to learn how to produce mellifluous notes, how to read music and how to understand basic rhythms.

The scheme runs from September 10 to October 15 and participants can even expect to be given an instrument which can be taken home to practice with.

Mark said: “We welcome both young people and adult learners, new learners and those returning to music. We can accommodate complete beginners, students who started learning previously and students with experience of playing other instruments.”

Swindon Pegasus is the oldest established musical organisation in Swindon, tracing its heritage back to the early 1900s and it currently has around 15 members.

In the 1970s the band appeared at the National Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall and finished in the ninth position, the highest position ever for a Wiltshire Band.

In recent times they were the 1995 West of England 1st Section Champions and managed to qualify for the National Finals. In 2013 they won the 2nd Section West of England and again qualified for the National Finals.
