HOT and spicy dishes straight out of Mexico were on the menu for youngsters from Eldene Primary School as they got a taste of the country’s cuisine.

As part of the Year Six’s topic this term they have been exploring the culture, history and life of Mexico and thanks to restaurant Chilli Shak in Victoria Road, Old Town, they were even able to sink their teeth into some tasty nachos with salsa, guacamole and sour cream for starters.

“They are really nice and the cheese is really stringy,” said Ethan, ten. “I was happy when I found out we were coming here because I’ve never tried Mexican food before.”

For the 32 pupils’ main course they were served mini chicken burritos smothered in rice and beans, followed by cinnamon crispies for dessert.

TK, ten, said: “It’s delicious and I’m overjoyed.”

While Tyler, also ten, said: “I think the nachos are quite tasty but quite spicy. We have been learning in school about the Aztecs and Mayas.”

Restaurant boss Akshay Madhani was approached by deputy headteacher Wendy Blanchard to ask if the youngsters could come along to make sure they could explore all aspects of the Mexican culture.

“We always have an exciting topic we don’t do boring,” Mrs Blanchard said. “The fact Chilli Shak is doing this for us for free is incredibly kind.”

Akshay added: “The children look like they are enjoying themselves which makes me happy to see. It is nice we have had the opportunity to do something for the community.

“Their teacher called and said they were doing something on Mexico and wondered if they could come and try some food but they had a small budget. We have to put back into the community so I said bring the kids here and we will provide the food free of charge.

“Mexico has such a nice vibrant coloured variety of food.”
