THE Adver will be heading to Birmingham for the Conservative Party conference in ten days – on a placard carried by the Swindon People’s Assembly.

Members of the group have used headlines from the paper over the last couple of years to illustrate what they say are examples of the impact of austerity.

Now they are calling on Swindon residents to join them on their trip to the demonstration, spaces on their coach are still available with special arrangements also being made for those with mobility restrictions.

Among the many political developments in recent years, the group have pointed to the cuts to the Dial-A-Ride budget as an example of where ‘efficiency savings’ have ended up hitting those most in need.

Kate Linnegar, of the Swindon People’s Assembly, said “Dial-A-Ride is a perfect example of the cuts from central government to local government impacting negatively on Swindon residents.

“We are also seeing the reduction in funding to our libraries, our sports facilities and parks and the imposition of parishing among other things.

“People need to let this government and our local council know that we do not accept their lies about the need for austerity. We know that it is a political choice not an economic necessity.

“The rich continue to get richer while our NHS, housing and education are underfunded.”

The People’s Assembly coach is leaving Swindon at 8.30am on Sunday, October 2.

Tickets cost between £5 and £20 depending on financial circumstances, those who can’t afford to pay for a seat just have to email peoplesassemblyswindon@gmx.co.uk to reserve one.

The Swindon Trades Union Council is financing a Dial-A-Ride minibus to bring people who are unable to come on the coach due to mobility restrictions.

Jon Timbrell, secretary of the Swindon TUC, said “As trade unionists, inclusion and equality are at the centre of everything we do.

“We are really happy to be able to offer transport to people of all abilities, to take part in this important demonstration.”
