THE Commonweal School Geography Department has been recognised by the Geographical Association and awarded the prestigious Secondary Geography Quality Mark for a third time.
To achieve the award, a school must demonstrate that its students make excellent progress in geography, and that students enjoy their lessons and are curious about the world.
Year 11 geography student Niamh Thompson, 15, said: "I really enjoy geography because I have learnt some fascinating facts about the world and have been on some fantastic field trips, like to The Eden Project and Kew Gardens. I’m working hard and aiming for an A or B in my GCSE."
Andrea Preston, Head of Geography said: " It is our ethos that students be inspired to see geography everywhere and have the opportunity to be outside the classroom. We are the only school in Swindon with this award and The Secondary Geography Quality Mark is recognition that Geography at Commonweal is successful, innovative and engaging for all students."
Faye Green, Head of Humanities said: "We have just achieved outstanding GCSE results in geography, with 76 percent of students achieving A*-C grades, so I was delighted that the department be awarded the quality mark as well. It is testament to the hard work of the students and teachers. Congratulations to Andrea and the team."
