A BUS driver has thrown his backing behind plans to make the town’s bus station smoke-free as the popular Stoptober event prepares to get under way once more.

Stagecoach leading driver Simon Turner said he was determined to drive smoking out of his life for the sake of his grandchildren.

The 40-year-old, from Abbey Meads, first started smoking at the age of 13 and has been hooked ever since apart from a few spells of quitting.

He said: “I’ve given up three or four times before, but this time it’s for good. My partner is older so we have three grandchildren and I want to be fit and healthy for them. I’ve been smokefree for around a month and already I can breathe better.”

A few years ago Simon ditched the cigarettes when he was on a health kick after having a health check which diagnosed him with high blood pressure.

He said: “I was in poor shape and decided to do something about it. I ended up shedding seven stone and doing triathlons, which was great. But it’s easy to slip back into bad habits and somehow or other the smoking just crept back into my life. I’m determined to go cold turkey and get rid of it for good this time.”

Other benefits since he stopped include sleeping better and saving lots of money.

Simon said: “I was spending about £12 a day, so my bank balance looks much healthier now. We’re going on holiday with the grandkids to Wales soon, so the extra cash will pay for some treats.”

Simon is also pleased about Swindon bus station going smoke-free from next month and thinks it’s setting the right example to young people.

He said: “Smoking is very bad for you and it smells disgusting, you don’t realise how bad it is until you stop, so I’m really glad about the ban.”

Simon is joining the growing number of people who are turning their back on smoking. The latest figures show that smoking rates in the South West are now at a record low of 15.5 per cent, with sales of cigarettes falling some 14 per cent in the region over the past year alone.

To help people in Swindon get in gear for Stoptober, a Thamesdown Transport bus arrived at the town centre bus station yesterday to become a health hub. Here, residents were able to get information about the Swindon Stop Smoking Service as well as free advice from the council’s Health Ambassadors about how to lead a healthy lifestyle.
