HOUSEHOLDERS on one Eastcott street were greeted by an amusing sight earlier this week as a parked car got in the way of road resurfacing work.

Although contractors had posted notes through the doors of houses along Clifton Street and erected signs warning of a road closure, one car owner clearly hadn’t got the message.

It meant that when the work was finished, the residents were left with a nice new stretch of tarmac - with the exception of one car-sized patch.

Richard Ruddle, who lives in the street, said the mix up made for quite an unusual sight.

“We got a note from the company who did the work but it didn’t have any clear times or dates about when they were meant to start,” he said.

“Next thing we know there were signs up but they said it would be done at the weekend.

“In the end it didn’t happen at the weekend it started the next week – there were a few cars still in their normal places.

“People are away at this time of year, some people work nights, maybe they didn’t get the message.

“I spoke to a few people in the street and the first they heard of it was when the signs went up.

“They ended up going round the one that was left there, it looked a bit strange.”

Richard said he hoped that the next time there was work to be done on the street the warnings would be clearer and sent further in advance.

A spokesman for Swindon Borough Council said that poor weather meant the work had to be put back from the weekend - a change to the planned dates.

The signs were amended when that became apparent but the mailed out warnings had already been circulated.

Despite the letter drop, signage and contact with the relevant authorities, the contractors were unable to move the one remaining vehicle.

Instead they were forced to work round it.

The Adver understands that the resurfacing teams have since returned to the road and completed the work that was not possible earlier in the week.
