A MAN who stole more than £700-worth of electrical items from John Lewis has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Jesse Cookson, 20, of The Crescent, Chiseldon, pleaded guilty to the offence dating from June 16 when he stole £728 of electrical goods from John Lewis when he came before the bench at Swindon Magistrates' Court. He further pleaded guilty to stealing £55-worth of goods from Wilkinsons in Swindon on June 28.

He also admitted missing his day in court on August 31.

Sentencing him, the magistrates revoked an existing community order that was imposed on August 1 for making off without payment, shoplifting, possession of cannabis and failing to surrender and instead imposed a custodial sentence of eight weeks, suspended for two years for all offences. In the meantime he must complete the thinking skills programme under the supervision of the probation service.

He must also pay a total of £783 compensation to John Lewis and Wilkinsons along with an £85 victim surcharge and £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Dean Ashburn was made the subject of a 12-month community order by Swindon magistrates after he pleaded guilty to a charge of using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour with intent to provoke violence or fear that it could be used against them.

At the hearing on September 14 Ashburn, aged 22, of Hawthorn Avenue, Pinehurst was also ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work, pay a victim surcharge of £85 and prosecution costs of £85.

A man is due to be sentenced next week after he pleaded guilty to a charge of harassment.

Aaren Goodfellow, 42, of The Moorings, admitted that between April 11 and May 10 of this year he pursued a course of conduct which amounted to the harassment of a woman.

He was arrested on September 11 by police after breaching his bail conditions not to contact the woman.

Goodfellow was released on bail not to contact the woman or enter within 100 metres of her home except when travelling through in a car, or in any event not to linger. He is due to be sentenced at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on October 5.

A man has been fined after he admitted stealing £40-worth of steak from a town supermarket

James Irwin, 37, of Berkley Road, Wroughton, pleaded guilty to the offence dating from March 17 when he came before magistrates sitting in Swindon.

The court heard he had stolen the steak from Lidl and ordered he pay compensation of £40 to the supermarket.

They further fined him £60 for the offence and ordered he pay a £20 victim surcharge and £40 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Magistrates bound over Richard Chatfield in the sum of £50, ordering him to keep the peace, especially towards the police.

Two allegations that he assaulted police on August 10 were dismissed when he appeared before Swindon magistrates on September 14.

But Chatfield, 63, of Reids Piece, Purton was ordered not to threaten any violence towards the police or a named woman.

A Royal Wootton Bassett man was committed by magistrates to Swindon Crown Court for after he admitted possessing cannabis with intent to supply, a charge of possession of cannabis and a third allegation of possessing ketamine.

Luke Lumsden, 24, of Roundhouse Drive, was granted unconditional bail by Swindon magistrates when he appeared before them on September 14.

A woman accused of using racially aggravated threatening or abusive words or behaviour in Meadowcroft on July 31 is to face trial at Swindon Magistrates' Court next month.

Jane Distill, 33, of Cottsway Court, Stratton St Margaret, denies the allegation. The bench granted her conditional bail when she appeared before them on September 14.
