FOOTBALL fans are being warned by police that any anti-social behaviour at tonight’s derby match against Oxford will result in a swift and robust response from officers.

Wiltshire Police have said they will be deploying a dedicated team of officers around the town in a bid to deter any violent behaviour from fans.

Scores of supporters are expected to arrive at Swindon Railway Station from Oxford in time for the 7.45pm kick-off.

The warning comes after Thames Valley Police arrested six people after a minor disorder when Swindon Town last came face to face with Oxford United last month.

The build-up to the game was largely peaceful, and police said there were no significant issues.

But there were some minor scuffles near the complex after the game, as well as two incidents in the car park outside the Kassam Stadium.

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Lucy Billen said three people were charged and three were given cautions for public order offences.

Last October four men were arrested after Swindon Town fans clashed with police in Botley Road before the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie, which Oxford won 2-0.

Wiltshire Police, who are keen to avoid any trouble on home turf, say they have plans in place to ensure the game goes ahead with minimal disruption.

A police spokesman said: “We are thoroughly prepared for this match in partnership with Swindon Town Football Club.

“In support of the football club staff, a dedicated policing operation will be in place in the area surrounding the club and town centre.

“We have plans in place to make sure there will be minimal disruption to the people of Swindon and the majority of fans who just want to watch the game.

“The message to anyone going to the match wanting to cause trouble is this: We will deal with any anti-social or disorderly behaviour with a swift and robust response.”
