A HIGHWORTH based charity that is part of a global network is looking for new members to breathe life into their organisation.

The Highworth and District Lions Club was formed in 1974 and has been active in all aspects of community life ever since.

Through the organisation of local events and support for local and national charities they have made a positive difference to many lives.

The Lions Club International Foundation is a worldwide collection of similar clubs and boasts over one million members.

Together they provide regular support, both financial and material, to communities impacted by natural disasters and conflict around the world.

President of the Highworth club, Rod Davis, said: "Just this week I have sent off a cheque for £1,000 to help with disaster relief in Haiti.

"The Lions helped a lot when the earthquake struck there and now they have been hit again by this hurricane."

Fellow Highworth Lion, Keith Ratcliffe, added: "There are Lions clubs all over the world - when a disaster strikes we don't have to look for planes and places to land them, we have people loading up trucks in the countries themselves."

Despite the impressive record of the club, they have come to realise that they are in need of new blood.

Rod said: "Many of our members are now over 60, we're not getting any younger and it would be nice to attract some new faces to get involved."

To help with this effort, the members will be hosting a 'Meet the Lions' event at 7pm tonight.

The event will take place at the council offices on Gilberts Lane and all are welcome.
