POLICE were called in to Swindon's newest nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning after a fight got out of hand.

Witnesses reported seeing bottles flying as an all-out brawl erupted in the upstairs RnB room at Tree nightclub, in Old Town, shortly before 3am.

One clubber, who did not wish to be named due to fears of retribution, said: "It was a horrible, horrible fight - it was a like a scene out of Football Factory.

"These were big guys and that is a small space - there were champagne bottles being used as weapons.

"The door staff responded quickly but the police were called to help.

"They shut the upstairs afterwards and wouldn't let us go back up - as we left there were riot police vans outside."

Wiltshire Police have released an appeal for witnesses following the incident.

PC James Pugh said: "The venue was busy, so we are appealing for anyone who was there and witnessed an altercation between several people.

"If you were there or have any information in relation to this, please contact me."

Tree's owner, local businessman Alan Mok, has said reports of the incident have been blown out of proportion.

"It wasn't a massive brawl, it was a few punches," he said.

"The guy didn't have a champagne bottle - he jumped over the bar and grabbed a bottle but it wasn't a champagne bottle.

"Our door staff reacted really quickly, we have the biggest security team in Swindon and 40 cameras in the club.

"We're trying our best but it is a new nightclub with lots of people coming in and there will always be some drunk and disorderly behaviour."

He said the club wanted those involved to be caught and pledged to assist officers with their enquiries.

This is not the first time that Tree, opened in August after a multi-million pound makeover, has come to the attention of the police.

Investigations are still ongoing into another incident on October 2 where a group of girls were the victim of an assault.

The group of three were assaulted by two other women on the dance floor.

One of the women was kicked in the neck whilst on the floor .

If you can help officers with either enquiry, please call Wiltshire Police on 101 or anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
