POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was found lying injured in the Prospect Place/South Street area of Old Town in the early hours of Sunday.
A spokesman said: "Our officers were called by the ambulance service, just before 2am, to the scene after a member of the public spotted the 45-year-old in the street and called paramedics.
"He was walking home when it appears he may have been attacked."
The man was taken to the Great Western Hospital with a fracture to his eye socket and some minor cuts and bruises.
Det Con Catherine Price said: "We would like to speak to anyone who was in this area around this time who may have seen or heard anything suspicious.
"Although early in the morning, Old Town is a busy place on a Saturday night/early Sunday morning - someone must have seen something.
"Our victim was wearing jeans, a light-blue, short-sleeved, linen shirt and brown shoes - did you see this man before he was injured?
"If you can help with our enquiries in anyway please contact me."
If you can help with our enquiries please contact DC Catherine Price at Swindon CID on 101 or anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
