TEN talented dancers from Royal Wootton Bassett showed off their best moves at the Dance Proms on Sunday.

Held at the Royal Albert Hall, the annual event has become renowned as the biggest national youth dance celebration in the UK and teenagers from the Wootton Bassett School of Dance (WBSD) were handpicked from over 1,000 entries to take part in the showcase.

Performing an original Georgian dance folk routine, the girls, aged between 13 and 20, have been practicing for their performance since June according to WBSD principal Kate Lawrence.

The 55-year-old said: “The whole thing was amazing. It was great to see the girls go on the stage for the first time and be amazed at how big the Royal Albert Hall was.

“We feel really privileged that we’ve been able to represent the village and we hope we’ve done them proud.”

The dancers study everything from modern, tap, national and Cecchetti ballet to acrobatics at the school and to compete in the Dance Proms, WBSD had to submit a video of their routine in order to secure one of just 22 dance group places.

At the showcase, they joined over 400 dancers in a group performance which they all learnt prior to the event.

Kate, who took over the running of WBSD 25 years ago and now runs it with her daughter Vicky, 25, added: “The Royal Albert Hall was nearly full with people watching the performances and it was a great atmosphere there on the day.

“We’ve never done anything like it before and we feel so grateful to be selected on our first try.

“It was such a great opportunity for the girls to take part but also for the parents and grandparents to come along to watch and support everyone.

The group performed to an audience of dance lovers, talent spotters and celebrity patrons including Darcey Bussell CBE, Matt Flint and Arlene Phillips CBE.

Dance Proms offer a platform for aspiring young dancers to perform on an international level at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall along with star guest performers.
