SUPPORTING those most in need is at the heart of Walcot Community Shop according to its chairman who presented a £500 cheque to Swindon Women’s Aid yesterday (Nov 3).

The Sussex Square shop, which moved to its new unit at the start of the year, has been a proud supporter of the service for a number of years as they offer domestic abuse support to residents in the town.

Chairman of the Walcot Community Shop and Library, Peter Mallinson, said by making such a generous donation, it is the shop's way of giving back to the women's aid who often donate items such as buggies and car seats which are snapped up by customers.

He added: “We appreciate their help but also we appreciate any donations because that is what we rely on.

“We reciprocate by giving SWA cheques and it was only six months ago that we gave them £500 so we try to give what we can and we will continue to support them.

“This money will go a long way.”

As well as running the shop, volunteers also dedicate their time to running the adjoining library which offers locals an outlet to socialise or get support from Peter who used to be a councillor.

“We do a lot of work behind the scenes as well by giving out small cheques of sums like £20, £50 and £100 to individuals who need money urgently once they have proven their cause,” he said.

“We are not just a charity shop at the end of the day because with our volunteers running the library, they have become a familiar face and we have a little community base here. People come in and drift into the library and then have a look around the shop and we have a coffee and chat.”
