A GROUP of teenagers put their lives at serious risk according to police after a video emerged online of them scaling some of Swindon’s highest buildings.

The video, posted on YouTube, and has since been handed to Wiltshire Police.

In the three minute clip, the youngsters are seen climbing on buildings which overlook the David Murray John Tower, Debenhams and the Tented Market.

It is believed to have been filmed on top of the Fleming Way car park among others but the exact date of filming is not yet known. See part of it below:

Since its release, inspector Steve McGrath from the town centre policing hub has said he hopes youngsters realise the danger they are putting themselves in particularly at how one wrong move could prove fatal.

“The individuals in this video are taking high risks,” he added.

“What they are doing is extremely dangerous, especially in a non-controlled area like this and without supervision.”

The act of urban free running has grown in popularity in recent years and has even seen a group form in the town call Swindon Parkour/Freerun. It is understood that the teenagers involved were not part of this group.

Ryan Hackett, from the group, said while he was in early teenage years when he got into free running, he went about it sensibly and learnt how to train himself up to take part.

The 19-year-old said: “Free running is about making sure the wall you are jumping on is safe and won’t fall – I think it is all about common sense at the end of the day.

“It has become quite popular and kids will see people doing it and think they will be able to do that but it can be dangerous. There are lots of videos online that help tell you how to do it properly.”

While the activity may not be seen as illegal, accessing areas of buildings which have been fenced off could be classified as trespassing which police have said they will investigate if reported.

Inspector McGrath added: “While we are not trying to ruin anybody’s fun I would urge the individuals in the video and anybody else considering doing something like this to think very carefully about the dangers they are putting themselves and other members of the community in.”

Wiltshire Police say to report any suspicious or dangerous behaviour in Swindon they can be called on 101.
