THREE months after losing his son, a grieving father is considering shutting his shop after falling victim to another break-in - just weeks after vandals smashed his front window.

John Doyle, whose son Michael, 29, from Penhill died from suspected blood poisoning and kidney failure in the summer in Bulgaria, only opened John’s Second Hand Furniture on Whitehouse Road a year ago.

But on Thursday morning, he was horrified to discover vandals had tried to break down the door overnight.

Since the last break-in, John was told by police that they would be stepping up patrols in the area but believes the latest attack shows a lack of action on their part.

“My son Michael wanted me to keep going with the business and I want to honour that for him but it is hard,” he added.

“He helped me start the business and the last few months have been a tough time for us and this isn’t just vandalism it is sheer stupidity. It is heartless what they’ve done and someone must have seen someone hanging around.

“I am really considering packing it all in because we don’t take a lot of money as it is and we do a lot of stuff for charity so when this happens it makes you think why put yourself through it.

“It feels like there is no let up for our family.”

Burglars also ransacked nearby North Star Autos – walking away with £7,000 worth of tools after they managed to smash through a wall.

Lee King, 37 and Nick Spruce, 39 who have owned the garage for the last six years, said the break-in has impacted on their trade and they’ve had to push back jobs.

Lee said: “They’ve nicked all the expensive stuff which we use every day and it is going to affect us for weeks now because we need to get our hands on replacement tools to carry out the work.

Nick added: “We’ve had a couple of break-ins before now but they’ve never taken anything of value.

“They went through all of our tool boxes and ransacked the place by throwing things all over the floor. They must have had a car to take it all away.”

Wiltshire Police say they do their best to investigate burglaries and will be looking into this incident in great depth.
