ALL three lanes at Bruce Street Bridges will be open to traffic on Friday at 6am.

Swindon Borough Council says vibrating steel plates are thought to behind the recent carriageway problems for drivers heading east.

On Monday workers began investigations when parts of the road surface there began to break up.

Delays on Wednesday afternoon were so bad that Thamesdown Transport cancelled several services after tweeting that some were running up to 40 minutes late.

A council spokesman said today: "A contractor acting on behalf of the council discovered the plates underneath the road during investigations to identify why the carriageway surface was breaking up.

"The steel plates, which have now been removed, had been laid to provide a protective layer for a previously undisturbed section of utilities under the junction.

"Investigations have concluded that the plates had been shifting under the weight of vehicles from above causing vibrations which led to cracks in the road surface.

"A surfacing contractor is on site today and the junction will be reopened to three lanes at 6am tomorrow morning.

"The council would like to thank motorists for their patience throughout the emergency works."
