A LEAKING roof has forced the unveiling of a plaque honouring Swindon starlet Diana Dors to be postponed.

A blue plaque was due to be revealed yesterday at the Kent Road, Old Town birthplace of the famous actress but, due to a leak in number 61's roof, organisers Swindon Heritage made the difficult decision to halt the ceremony.

Swindon Heritage researcher Noel Beauchamp said the group was now looking forward to the rescheduled ceremony, due to held in January.

“We didn’t want scaffolding overshadowing the plaque unveiling and we made the decision to postpone it. Our special guest, whose identity we are not revealing, has been informed and we’re looking forward to the ceremony which will go ahead as planned in the New Year.

“It is disappointing but it wasn’t deliberate, it’s something you can’t control and so we are focused on the ceremony which we expect to hold in January.”

The reveal of the blue plaque has been hotly anticipated across the town, with the location kept under wraps until two weeks ago.

The only traces of Diana’s legacy in the town are currently marked with a statue at Shaw Ridge and a bronze bust created by Enid Mitchell, currently on display at the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery on Bath Road.
