ARKELL’S Brewery was aglow with the spirit of Christmas as families shrugged off the gloom and drizzle to enjoy the second annual Christmas Market on Saturday.

Head brewer Alex Arkell estimated between 4000 and 5000 people came through the gates of the brewery in Kingsdown during the day.

They were greeted with bright lights, Christmas music and the aroma of mulled wine. Dozens of stalls were laid out on the cobbled yard, offering sweet treats, seasonal delicacies, crafts and gifts.

Father Christmas, holding court in his grotto, handed out almost 200 presents to children.

“It has gone very well despite the weather. The car parks were full by 11am,” said sales director Nick Arkell. “People were still coming in the gates at 2.30pm.”

He explained: “The aim is to say we are Arkells and we’re here. A lot of people don’t know they can buy beer here. It is to show them inside the brewery.”

About 50 staff and friends volunteered to stage the event at the Victorian steam brewery. “We have had a huge number of staff who have helped us and given up their day to support it.”

Lesley Davis, who was one of the organising committee said they had decided to hold the market again after the success of the first one last year. In fact they have already decided the event will be run again next year.

This time they introduced a food court. Local producers were also able to showcase their hams, cheeses and patisserie. Other stalls offered jewellery, candles and children’s clothing. Fees from the stall pitches will go to Prospect Hospice.

A musical accompaniment was provided by the Pegasus Brass Band and the Ukey d’Ukes ukulele band.

“Speaking to some of the stallholders, they seemed really happy,” said Lesley. “The local community loves it because there is not much going on around here.”
