SPARRING martial arts whizz Olivia Harrison has been nominated for prestigious sponsorship from one of the biggest martial arts organisations in the world.

The 13-year-old Commonweal School pupil is already a second degree black belt.

Now she is in line for a Hyper Martial Arts Athlete sponsorship by Sensei Zara Phythian.

In a letter to Olivia, Sensei Zara Phythian, head of WMKF England who is currently appearing in the new marvel film Dr Strange, wrote: “Congrats on all of your success in competitions and as a martial artist. You have been dominating your divisions and training hard for quite some time. We really enjoy watching great martial arts athletes like you. We, at Hyper, are going to sponsor a few top athletes and we would like you to be a part of our movement.

“Our goal is to recognize you, your instructors and your school, for your awesome talent. We want you to be a part of future projects, photo shoots, inspirational campaigns and help us inspire more students and people across the world. Most important we want to have fun doing what we love- martial arts. We look forward to working with you and seeing what we can do in the future.”

Olivia was just five-years-old when she started martial arts classes with Matt Fiddes in Swindon.

" I started because they came to do a PE lesson at my school and I loved it. I was very shy and my parents thought it would be good for my confidence. I train on Mondays and Tuesdays and I am also a junior instructor and I assist my instructor Master Moyce on Tuesdays." said Olivia who has a packed week.

"On Fridays I do a sparring lesson with Mr Reeve and Mr Rosario and Saturday I assist with the Mighty Matt’s class, then train all day. After that I usually go and do competition training at a local gym until around 5 30pm," she said.

Olivia says she loves competing and having goals to work towards.

" I've lost and won competitions and I like to learn from losing as if you're a gracious loser you'll be a gracious winner too," she said.

And she added: I can't recommend Martial Arts for all ages enough, it covers everything you need for life in general, self-defence, respect, integrity, humility. It's helped my discipline with my school work too, I love it and can't imagine my life without it now.”

Olivia’s trophy to date include the Matt Fiddes championship medals/trophies -a bronze, a silver and eight golds in sparring. Two bronze, two silver and four golds in forms WMKF qualifiers; one bronze two golds in WMKF Worlds championships; two silvers in Korean Katas and one silver in team Katas ISKA Championships; one bronze in Katas WMO British champs, one gold in Korean Katas and one gold in team Katas.
