A DAZZLING display of frocks and glitter adorned the red carpet event at Commonweal School which was held to celebrate the creation of an anti-bullying film.

The film, Hope, was funded by Arts Council England, Grants for the Arts and produced by Revolution Performing Arts, in partnership with Create Studios, Prime Theatre and Commonweal School.

“We are proud to be associated with this project which will undoubtedly be very useful to aid young people with issues around bullying,” said Josie Williams, community arts development officer at Commonweal.

Create Studios agreed to work with RPA and the young people chose anti-bullying as a theme.

Working in front of and behind the camera, Create showed Rapport how to use digital media within a performance project from their own ideas.

Media professionals experienced in mentoring young people explored how film can be used to complement and convey a story whilst also being expressed through street and contemporary dance.

The young people learned planning, technical, filming and editing skills using cameras, sound recording, and photography.

"These skills offered an alternative to the performance roles within the wider project, and were inclusive of different levels of skill & confidence,” said director Paul Da Silva – Adams.

Hope is a multi genre anti-bullying film project which involved 38 young people aged 11-16 years. The combined live and filmed theatre element was performed at the end of November at St Joseph's College.

Revolution Performing Arts (RPA) started in 2007 with four children, with a mission to provide affordable access to performing arts to all young people. It now works with over 400 young people every week aged from 18-months to 16-years.

It concentrates its funded work in the most socially deprived wards and societal groups.

"We work with ‘looked after’ children in care and the children at Swindon Women’s Aid Refuge, providing a sense of escape from trauma," said Paul.

RPA also provides a family support morning to encourage autistic young people and their parents to experience the arts and network with each other.
