THE Pride of Swindon Awards are all about recognising the selfless and inspiring work done by those in the community.

And none embodies those qualities more than 12-year-old Phoebe Maddison who last year scooped the award for her commitment to being a role model for other children

Phoebe was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of four and has refused to let her condition rule her life.

In her short life she has managed to raise thousands of pounds for diabetes charities and record a CD as she continues to raise awareness of the condition.

Recalling last year’s award win, Phoebe, who attends Isambard school, said: “I wasn’t expecting it at all. There are so many talented people in Swindon and lots of people deserved to win it.

“It felt absolutely amazing to win. It was such a great experience and it was good to be able to take something home to remember it all.”

Encouraging people to vote for who they think should be named the next Pride of Swindon, Phoebe said: “There are so many people out there who have an impact on the lives of others.

“Please nominate someone because it is a lovely thing to have and to be proud of.”

Speaking highly of Phoebe’s work, her nominator told the judges: “Phoebe is a little star. Never saddened by her illness, she always expressed a positive attitude in saying ‘Many more children are far worse and poorly than me’.

“She takes any opportunity to help educate others and is supportive to other young persons recently diagnosed.

“Phoebe went out of her way to get in touch and give advice to children on how best to deal with their condition. Hospital peers have commented on her caring and positive manner.”

Mayor of Swindon Eric Shaw officially launched the Pride of Swindon Awards 2017 at the beginning of December, calling on residents across the town to shine a light on those individuals and groups who have gone above and beyond the call of duty for the good of their community and the wider town.

All nominations for the 2017 awards will be considered by a panel of judges before those who are shortlisted will be invited to attend a glittering presentation event at Steam on March 16 when they will be honoured with a special badge and certificate.

They will also find their names honoured on a plaque in the Central Library which will be unveiled later in the year.

To nominate someone visit www.swindon.gov.uk/prideofswindon where you will find a nomination form. The closing date for entries is Friday, January 27 at noon.
