BUILDINGS were bathed in bright purple light tonight (JAN 19) to celebrate the launch of a Cancer Research UK fundraiser.

Christ Church, Central Library and the Arts Centre lit up in the vivid colour to mark the upcoming Relay for Life.

It is a 24 hour, non-athletic team activity that will take place over the first weekend of July next year.

Teams of participants will set up camp at the Croft Sports Centre before taking turns to walk round the track for the duration of the event, and show that cancer never sleeps

Previous relays held in Swindon have been the scene of emotional triumphs by, among others, survivors of cancer who have come back to be able to take part in the event.

Lucy Walker, Wiltshire fundraising manager for Cancer Research UK, was inspired to get involved with the charity after losing her beloved grandmother Maureen to the disease.

She said: “More are more people have been touched by cancer and this day is about raising awareness as well as funds for the charity

“I’m really looking forward to it. It is always a very emotional day. I hope lots of people will sign up and get involved because it is such a different and fun event.”

Anyone from toddlers to grandparents can get involved. The charity hopes more than 100 people will sign up and to raise thousands of pounds.

The event will include a celebratory mix of music, games, entertainment, hot chocolate and of course, fundraising for the charity.
